Bridging the Gap: Defining Best Practices for Sleep Communication in Medical Contexts

Join us for the final meeting of the Health Communication Working Group, where we’ll refine and solidify best practices for effective, evidence-based communication about sleep health in medical settings. This session is a collaborative opportunity to address critical moments when doctors, sleep specialists, and other medical professionals engage with patients about sleep health.

Session Objectives:

1.Beyond Stop-Bang:

•Explore innovative approaches to sleep screening and diagnostic conversations that extend beyond traditional tools like STOP-BANG.

•Identify how these new strategies can improve patient understanding and outcomes.

2.Cross-Specialty Insights:

•Examine what medical professionals in general practice, internal medicine, and other fields can learn from sleep specialists to better address sleep concerns.

•Discuss actionable advice for sleep specialists to improve collaboration and communication with allied health professionals.

3.Critical Communication Moments:

•Highlight the most impactful points of interaction between medical professionals and patients regarding sleep, from initial consultations to follow-up care.

•Develop best practices for these moments, incorporating empathy, evidence, and clarity.

4.Building Practical Tools:

•Work together to create checklists, conversation guides, or other resources to make evidence-based sleep communication actionable and scalable.

Who Should Attend?

•Sleep Specialists: Share expertise and learn strategies for working more effectively with allied professionals.

•Primary Care Physicians and Internists: Gain insights into incorporating sleep health into everyday practice.
